For gemstones, request a clear description of the material, whether it is natural or laboratory-grown, and any known treatments. Ask which documentation accompanies the stone and what that documentation tells you. You should be able to explain the choice to someone else after the conversation.

Compare the practical details

Bring the same questions to each appointment so you can compare meaningful answers. Who will be your contact? Which design decisions need approval? What is included with the finished piece? How are sizing, future maintenance and any changes handled? Ask for the applicable policies in writing rather than assuming all jewelers work the same way.

If a date matters, explain it at the start and ask when the jeweler can confirm feasibility. A proposal date and a preferred pickup date are different things; making both clear helps avoid misunderstandings.

Use reviews as a starting point

Read detailed accounts of communication, problem-solving and the type of project you are considering. A review is an individual experience, not a guarantee that another project will unfold identically. Combine what you read with your own conversation and the written details of your piece.
